Winning a life-changing sum of money is a dream scenario we’ve all gone over in our heads again and again.
But one man who was tricked into thinking he had hit the jackpot on a scratch card looked as though he had already started spending the money before he was sent crashing back down to earth.
In a video shared on Reddit, the man can be seen scratching off the last box before handing the card to a worker at the shop where he purchased it, who asks: “Ready to see how much you won bro?”
As he puts the card through the machine, it plays a triumphant noise as the worker says: “What the f***! You won’t believe it. You will not believe it.”
The customer is hesitant to trust him at first, as he puts his hands to his head, replying: “You lying, how much bro? You lying, I know you’re lying.”
He runs around the counter to the till to see the screen himself, where he discovers the noise had signalled he had won a grand total of £1.45 ($2).
The camera quickly pans to his face to show a truly broken man, before the cashier quickly adds insult to injury, adding: “I’m lying.”
The clip has racked up thousands of views, but people took to the comments to say it would not have gone down well with them.
One said: “The look on his face. What a d**k this employee is lmao.”
A second wrote: “How to make and ruin a guy’s day in two easy steps.”
Someone else said: “I feel bad for this guy, such hype and such huge disappointment.”
And others added tales of their own similar experiences, as another replied: “Had a semi similar thing happen when I checked my lotto ticket on the scanner at 7-11.
“I saw ‘winner’ pop up and my knees immediately went a little weak before my brain could process the ‘$1’ part underneath. For like half of a split second I knew what it felt like to be mega rich. I still think about it from time to time…”
